It wasn't that long ago when I found my mother drunk, passed out on crack hanging over the hood of a parked car in Brooklyn. It was about the 10th time she'd done this, so I took her to a place in New York City to detox for 7 days before she could get into a long-term 18-month facility to help with her addiction. Unfortunately, there was an 8-day span before she could get into that place. So, I stayed in a hotel with her for that time - day in and day out - making sure that she stayed straight. On the 4th day, my brother and sister were supposed to come stay with her as I tried to get some sleep. They never showed up. I left her for a few hours, and when I got back, I found that she took her food stamps, crossed the highway to the Shop-Rite, bought bottles and bottles of Vanilla Extract and got plastered - completely wasted from something that you bake with. I started writing that day. I picked up a notebook and wrote exactly what I saw. After a decade of writing, and experiencing addiction and recovery myself, the film I wanted to tell has became something that touches everyone who sees it. CRUTCH takes risks as it explores self-discovery, and in that is where its success lies. |
